There are mailers, social media posts, and emails which claim that three Pennsylvania Supreme Court justices should not be retained for another 10 year term. This messaging is incorrect.
The justices who are up for a retention vote are endorsed by the non-partisan Pennsylvania Bar Association to keep their jobs.
The claim that voting "no" will enforce term limits is incorrect; this vote is simply a yes/no vote on whether these current justices continue to serve. It will not amend the Pennsylvania state constitution or change any laws.
Other messaging claims the justices engaged in partisan gerrymandering. This is incorrect. The court actually prevented the use of a gerrymandered congressional map.
They do not have an agenda except to do justice … It’s my hope that they are resoundingly retained so as to send a message to those who would take down a judge or justice simply for partisan political advantage.— Shanin Specter (University of Pennsylvania Professor of Law), to WITF
